Hernando County School District. It is a place where

Hernando County students can experience and enjoy

nature, yet learn to understand Florida’s ecosystems

through a variety of hands-on experiences.

“This is a phenomenal program,” Sanders

said. “This is where we can really get out our water

conservation message.”

“We really have some beautiful pieces of

property,” Sanders aid. “By providing recreational

uses, it helps build a love for the land and,

hopefully, a desire to protect these lands. It’s a

stewardship quest.”

There are many recreational opportunities offered

on the lands acquired by the Southwest Florida Water

Management District. Visit

https://www.swfwmd.state. fl.us/recreation/

for a comprehensive list.

Other recreational

areas of note:

The 46-mile

Withlacoochee Bike Trail

has

a parking lot just off State Road 50 on Croom Rital

Road, east of Ridge Manor West. The trail winds

its way north to Citrus Springs in Citrus County

and south to Trilby in Pasco County. The trail is

the longest paved rail trail in Florida. There is also

the Suncoast Trail, a 42-mile paved trail that runs

parallel to the Suncoast Parkway from Northern

Hillsborough County, through Pasco, and into

Hernando. Additional trails for bicycling can be

found within the Weeki Wachee Preserve and the

Chassahowitzka National Wildlife Management

Area (on marked trails), as well as the perimeters of

Anderson Snow Park, Lake Townsen Regional Park

and Veteran’s Park.
