The Greater Dania Beach area offers a wide range of activities and attractions appealing to all interests and ages. Beaches, shopping, dining, cultural pursuits, and sports beckon to residents and visitors alike. The Dania Beach Waterfront and Pier is a community landmark. The seashore is the perfect place for residents and visitors alike to relax and enjoy the scenery. On the weekends the beach is the busiest, active with sunbathers, wave boarders, swimmers, joggers, and families picnicking and enjoying the Florida sunshine. Located on the north end of the waterfront, the Dania Beach Fishing Pier beckons anglers to try their luck in catching the “big one.” The world headquarters of The International Game Fish Association is located just off Interstate 95 in Dania Beach. The IGFA Hall of Fame and Museum houses traditional and interactive exhibits that capture the excitement and beauty of recreational fishing. The town originated in the 1880s when the FEC railroad line was established. W.C. Valentine was responsible for developing the railroad and it was he that first named the town Modello as an acronym for Henry Flagler’s Model Land Company. In 1904, the town name was changed to Dania to honor the original residence’s Danish heritage and again in 1998 to Dania Beach to designate the city’s ocean front status. The first home built in Dania Beach resides to this day on 400 South Federal Highway. The house was built by A.C. Frost who is considered the town’s founder. As well, Frost established the first general store and schools in the area, built the Intracoastal Waterway, and became the village’s first postmaster. In 1945, a new enterprise was launched that would give Dania Beach lasting recognition. Willard and Genevieve Ely opened the first antique shop in the area, drawing customers from all over. Within ten years, Dania Beach became the Antiques Capital of the South. Today there are over 100 antique dealers along Federal Highway enticing collectors with their wares. These shops specialize in everything from antiques to fine art to restoration. One of the biggest events held annually in Dania Beach is the Tomato Festival,
a celebration that began in 1927 of Dania being the “Tomato Capital of
the World”. It lasted for 30 years until 1958, when tomato farming was
all but gone. However, in 1999 Dania Beach Main Street, Inc., revived the traditional
festival and it has developed into one of the most popular annual events of
the city. |
