Sebastian's wealth includes gems of another sort, rare antiquities washed upon its shores. It's colorful history boasts of shipwrecks and lost fortunes dating to the 1500's. Today Archeologists and treasure hunters continue to search these waters for the gold, jewelry, and other artifacts lost in history.While on land explorers of a different sort, tourists, discover the pristine beauty of this land. The Sebastian River Area sits on one of North America's most diverse estuaries, the Indian River Lagoon. home to one of Sebastian's treasured landmarks, Pelican Island, America's first National Wildlife Refuge.

The Sebastian River Area, situated in the northernmost part of Indian River County, lies between Vero Beach (the county seat) to the south and Melbourne to the north. It includes Sebastian (pop. 15,125), Fellsmere (pop.2311) and Orchid, Roseland, and Wabasso. The estimated population for those living in the Sebastian River Area is approximately 30,000.

A walk along Sebastian's riverfront takes you past old fish houses whose salty aromas recall times past, dockside restaurants where a view of the famous pelican is guaranteed, and marinas harboring pleasure boats of all sizes. You will find several piers for fishing, a children's playground, and in your walk don't miss the little bronze statue of Mr. Pelican Man himself, Paul Kroegel smoking his pipe, as he surveys with pleasure, the tranquil waters and islands of the Indian River Lagoon.

Visitors will find plenty to do in Sebastian. Camping is a favorite pastime at the beautiful Sebastian Inlet State Park on A1A. This area is also considered to have the best surfing on the East Coast with several official competitions held throughout the year. There are plenty of sites for fishing and golf. For the thrill seeker Sebastian hosts one of the most spectacular skydiving views in the world.
